Bloor: ‘They boys were magnificent’

Despite dominating the majority of the match Welling United had to settle for a point against Chippenham Town. After the match Mark Doig spoke to manager Danny Bloor.

“Not having won was not for the lack of effort, not for the lack of creating chances.” he said

“I think their goalkeeper was man of the match so we are frustrated, we want to win every game, but I don’t think that there was much more that we could have done today.

“The boys were magnificent. Obviously, it’s bitterly disappointing but they were very resolute, Chippenham. There’s a lot of positives but we need to win games of football. Unfortunately we didn’t do that today, but we didn’t lose.”

He continued “It’s plain to see that we need to be inventive in the forward areas. I thought that Paps (Antony Papadopoulos) was good when he came on and Enoch (Mulongwe) can be pleased with his first league start.

“We changed our shape at the end when we threw David (Kamara) on but could the group of players give Welling United Football Club any more? I don’t think so. The fans must look and know they’re a good honest bunch, they’ve given their best. Perhaps we’re lacking a bit of quality in the final third, perhaps we need to address that.”

Javarn Pitterson has come in for first choice goalkeeper Ben Winterbottom for the last two games. Bloor expressed his delight in his performances. “When you think that you’ve brought a nineteen year-old in in goal, I shouldn’t think too many have played two games and kept two clean sheets and he was excellent again.” he said. “Ben was available but he has a bit of a quad injury and I felt that I needed to make a decision. Ben’s our number one goalkeeper and there’s every chance that he’ll play next Saturday. We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

“We’ll dust ourselves down, we’ll travel to Weymouth next Saturday and we’re not losing (games). Apart from that debacle at Torquay, we’re in every game but we need to turn some of these draws into victories.”

Before that, Welling have a Monday night London Senior Cup tie at New Salamis. Bloor confirmed that it will not be a Wings team full of Under 23s and academy players. He said “We’ll play all the subs from today and one or two other people around us. All of our squad will be going and it’s a competition that we want to do well in.”
