The heavens opened just before the final whistle and developed into a full scale thunderstorm, accompanied by torrential rain.Blackburn

The homeward bound fans got soaked to the skin but their spirits could not be dampened, not those of the Charlton fans anyway.

Johnnie Jackson and Yann Kermorgant were passed fit and took their places on the bench. Bradley Pritchard came in for Mark Gower and Cameron Stewart replaced Callum Harriott, as Chris Powell returned to an orthodox 4-4-2 formation.

The Addicks struck early and the goal proved decisive. A chipped pass from Dale Stephens was chested down by Simon Church who was clear with just the keeper to beat. Church finished clinically, putting the ball to Jake Kean’s right.

On the half hour mark Ben Hamer was forced to make an excellent save from a Jordan Rhodes effort. So good was the keeper’s save that Rhodes sportingly congratulated him.

After the break, Charlton were largely on the back foot, as Blackburn went in search of an equaliser.

Kermorgant entered the fray midway through the half and Powell had to placate a clearly unhappy Marvin Sordell when he came off.

Kermorgant tried an impudent lob from the halfway line shortly after his arrival.

The Addicks tried to slow the game down, Hamer in particular annoying the home fans.

The fourth official signalled six minutes of additional time which stretched to eight before Kevin Wright brought proceedings to an end.

A second successive clean sheet, a first away win since April and a first league win since August will leave Powell a very happy man tonight.
