Bell-Drummod hoping for bounce back
Bell-Drummod hoping for bounce back

Kent Spitfires captain Daniel Bell-Drummond is confident his side can bounce back from their 10-wicket defeat against Somerset on Monday.

England’s Tom Banton struck a 51-ball unbeaten 107 in the match, with New Zealand opener Devon Conway reaching 50 at the other end, and Somerset breezed past Kent’s 168/8 with more than four overs to spare.

Bell-Drummond admitted after the game that emotions were raw, but focus had to turn to a response.

“It is a tough one to take,” said the 27-year-old. “We are all still getting our heads round it.

“None of our batters quite got going, no scores over 40, and their two batsmen both got 50, plus and Banton’s 100 was outstanding.

“It is still fresh. No matter how hard it has hit us we need to pick ourselves up and we need to try and get a win tomorrow and a win Friday and then hopefully we won’t remember this game and will forget it in a rush. We will have to dissect what happened, but we have to move on from it.”

The outfield was swarmed by an unusual mist for most of Kent’s innings and part of Somerset’s innings, causing tricky batting conditions and a damp ball more often than not. Naturally, that played a role in Kent’s performance, but Bell-Drummond admitted the team have to look a bit closer to home for explanations too.

“They were weird conditions, quite misty,” he said. “Their seamers bowled to their plans, and we couldn’t get going.

“We can’t put it all down to conditions, we have to look at ourselves too, but the conditions did change a tiny bit. It wasn’t that much though and we got thrashed – it is a tough one to take and we need to pick ourselves up.

“I can’t get around the mist. Zak (Crawley, Bell-Drummond’s opening batting partner) and I found it fairly tough. It was still a good wicket, but not compared to other wickets here and with them bowling well we did our best.

“We should have carried on, but we were quite happy with our powerplay. There was the period in the middle with Denly and Blake where it seemed weird, it was skipping on with de Lange and he was quite tough to pick up. You don’t want to use that as an excuse, but it was tough for our guys.

“Cox did well at the end, but we couldn’t quite get going as a team and part of that was down to their bowling as well as the conditions.

“It was quite wet out there with the rain we have had, and it was tough in the field too with people losing their footing. It is a tough one to take – I didn’t think the conditions were that helpful but there was a lot more we could have done.”

Kent will have the chance to bounce back almost immediately when they travel to Hove to take on Sussex on Tuesday. Bell-Drummond insisted focus must now be on that game.

“We have got to pick ourselves up and go again,” he said. “We have won a lot of games in this competition so far and we just have to go back to how we have been hitting the ball and how well we have been executing our skills.

“With Adam Milne back in the fold, he is a word class bowler and will come good for us and Qais Ahmad’s form is good to see. I am confident in the guys, and we need to pick it up on Tuesday.

“It is always a tough place to go. I think the guys are looking forward to getting back on straight away. It is good there isn’t a long time for the next game for us to pick up, but I am looking forward to it and so are the guys. It is always a good challenge to go to Sussex.

“We aren’t trying to think forward, but we want to come top two. In the past we have started quickly and battled to get in, so we have our sights firmly set on coming first or second.

“We will start again on Tuesday and hopefully pick up a win and get the momentum going again.”
