Bath City 4-0 Welling United

Another disappointing performance on the road ended with Welling United being well beaten at Bath City.

Jordan Thomas had Bath’s first opportunity with a low drive that Reice Charles-Cook did well to turn around the post.

However, Welling enjoyed good possession in the early stages only for the final pass keep going awry. That proved costly when they went behind midway through the first half.

It was particularly disappointing that it was from a corner of their own. A poor delivery allowed the hosts to break quickly.

A couple of missed challenges allowed it to get out to Elliott Frear, and he clipped it into the middle for an unmarked Scott Wilson to head home.

Frear might have scored himself soon after when his free header was kept out by the left boot of Reice Charles-Cook.

Dan Hayfield skied wide after being played in by Frear but hopes that Welling had of going in at the break with only a one goal deficit were dashed when the Romans scored again in injury time. Frear crossed, Tom Smith headed down, and Thomas scrambled it home.

There was still time for Wilson to fire over before the first half ended.

Danny Bloor, the Welling manager, made a double change at the interval, replacing TJ Bramble and Josh Chambers with Adam Roscrow and Jephte Tanga, and they had a great opportunity to pull one back early in the second period.

Tristan Abrahams was sent clear by Kain Adom and tried to clip it home but Bath goalkeeper Will Buse made himself big and blocked the shot with his chest.

That proved to be as good as it got for Welling as they went further behind in the eleventh minute of the second half. Frear was again given the opportunity to cross and Hayfield was completely unmarked when heading it inside the post.

It could have been worse for the Wings shortly after when Jordan Dyer’s header flew back out off the crossbar.

Thomas shot wide for the Romans but was involved when they added a fourth with three minutes remaining. He burst into the penalty area and was tripped by Tanga. Cody Cooke stepped up and beat Charles-Cook from the spot.

As a result of the defeat, Welling are now five points adrift of the safety zone as they move into the second half of the season.
