Bromley’s League One debut season began away at Oakwell on Saturday afternoon with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Barnsley thanks to a second half goal from Victor Adeboyejo.
Bromley went into the game lining up 4-5-1, missing the injured playmaker Ashley Charles in midfield, with Ben Thompson coming in.
The match got off to an open start with corners at either end before The Ravens went close, Thompson firing wide after latching on to a Marcus Ifill through ball.
Barnsley then created some good chances with Kay heading wide and Kelly forcing a save from Shamal Geroge. Mitchell Pinnock then had a chance saved by Tykes’ keeper Ravenhill after a slip by Bland in the area.
After a frantic start there was a delay for an injury to Cleary when he collided into an advertising board when being matched by Ifill in a foot race down the left.
As The Ravens rallied, Corey Whitely fired wide when latching on to a Thompson flick on, before Barnsley pressed again late on in the half.
Kay and McGeehan having shots saved by Geroge, Noslin then shooting wide and Kay rattling the bar from range as the home side looked for an opener.
Tykes defender Bland was booked for a poor challenge on Jacob Mendy, before Pinnock made a great block to deny McGeehan as he let fly from the edge of the area.
In injury time Pinnock put a chance wide for Bromley after latching on to a long ball out of defence, but the half ended all square.
The second half started at a very slow pace before Cheek had three chances to score in quick succession, Josh Earl blocking his first shot before Ravenhill made a double save from The Ravens striker.
The play was then halted for an injury to Sowunmi before Barnsley had a very strong spell of pressure. Connell had a shot from range saved, Geroge then denied Cleary one on one and made a double stop from Noslin and Alker.
After an injury to Mendy, Andy Woodman made four changes and Bromley took their chance to go ahead with two of the subs involved. Archer had a shot deflected and it landed in the path of Adeboyejo who turned the ball home from twelve yards for 1-0.
It was nearly two soon after when Pinnock crossed for Archer, but the Luton Town loanee put his chance over. Barnsley pushed for a win again from there, George made a brave block to deny Richards and then made two more stops from Cleary.
In the nine minutes of added on time Bromley managed the clock well and held on for an historic victory.
This was a classic Bromley performance under Andy Woodman, 33% possession of the ball, working hard and taking the chance when it comes, with a great display from keeper Shamal Geroge on his league debut.
The Ravens now have a week to prepare for their home game with Cambridge Utd at Hayes Lane next Saturday.
