After 16 wickets fell on the first day, few had hopes that this game would last until after the tea interval on the third day. 
It took one big partnership for each side to extend this game, but this did give time for Mark Pettini (113 and 46*) and Adam Ball (121 & 25*) to demonstrate how it was possible to play on the Billericay pitch.
Durham won the toss and chose to bat on a pitch that offered a bit of encouragement to the bowlers with the new ball. The home side would have been happy to have Durham four wickets down at the lunch break, with Kishen Velani (2-10) claiming the key wickets of Ram Singh (27) and Graham Clark (35).
Durham reached 120 when Saj Mahmood started a spell of 6-1-10-4 that ripped the heart out of the middle order. Mahmood found the edge of the bat four times in his spell; Geraint Jones taking two catches behind the wicket, James Tredwell two at second slip as the Kent pair held on to seven chances between them. Andy Ireland (22*) helped push the score up to 179, but no-one knew how good a score that may be.
Paul Coughlin and Gavin Main opened with a fiery spell that saw four wickets down for just 12 inside the first 9 overs of the Essex/Kent reply, and it was starting to look like 179 could be a challenging total. Mark Pettini though seemed to be the only batsman who looked to have time to play; taking a look for the first half hour, then capitalising on any width to move to 60 out of 98-6 at the close of play.
The first session of day 2 couldn’t have been a bigger contrast as Pettini and Adam Ball batted through the session, extending their stand for the 7th wicket to 189. Mahmood and Charlie Hartley helped Ball take the score past the 300 mark, before the side was eventually dismissed for 302; a lead of 123.
Durham were forced into a change of order, with opener Calum MacLeod playing at Lords for Scotland, and Hartley made another early breakthrough. Singh and Clark put on 54, before another burst from Mahmood reduced Durham to 75-4. 17-year old Jack Burnham survived a vicious bouncer from Mahmood first ball and survived to the close of play on 20, but his side was still 2 runs behind on 121-7.
Burnham (84*) and the returning MacLeod put on 106 for the 8th wicket as it looked like there would be a second morning session without a wicket, but Tom Craddock induced an edge from MacLeod to give Jones a seventh catch for the game. Ryan Buckley hit 6 boundaries out of 28 as he and Burnham added a rapid 40 to given Durham something to defend; setting Essex & Kent 149 to win.
Fabian Cowdrey (18) and Dan Lawrence (36) showed an aggressive intent, putting on 36 within 7 overs. It took another calm innings from Pettini (46*), aided by Ball (25*) to take the home side to their target.
