Ashford United 0-1 Molesey

Ashford United remain winless in Bostik South after a frustrating home defeat at the hands of a Molesey side who in the end just had a bit too much for Jason Whitmore’s young side. The games only goal arrived a quarter of an hour from time when the visitors sub Sobowale picked up a throw from the left and unleashed a drive that flew beyond United keeper Aaron Lee Wharton and into the net.  It was tough on Whitmore’s side but in the final analysis, the
United boss will probably be the first to admit that if his side had taken just a couple of the chances that they created, Sobowale’s drive
would have been just a consolation for the visitors.

With Max Watters looking especially lively for United, it was the home side who had the first chance when Watters himself was denied by the boot of Molesey keeper Allen.  The keeper then had to be alert to grab Tyrell Richardson-Brown’s looping header from underneath his crossbar, before Simeone sent the ball into the car park at the other end as a corner wasn’t really dealt with.

The visitors were then perhaps fortunate to have Charles’ reckless looking challenge on Michael Phillips punished with just a yellow card
especially in the modern climate, but in this case referee Searle decided that a booking was a just punishment.

Richardson-Brown and Watters then combined for United’s next chance when again the visitors keeper again denied Watters – this time with a smart save at his near post – and then shortly after Joe Bingham tested Allen again from an impossible angle after the visitors defence stopped waiting for a flag that didn’t come.  The half ended with Akinsanya stung Wharton’s fingers with a driven cross that flew across the face of goal.

The second half saw Molesey allow the home side a lot of possession and to be fair saw Ashford threaten, but sadly for the young home
guns, either their final ball either wasn’t good enough or just wasn’t there!

As the half grew, the visitors probing raids grew and grew – Wharton did well twice to thwart Chalke and Grobler before another cross shot – this time from Charles needed clawing away by the Ashford keeper. Sobowale was then allowed far to much room to score the games only goal and it really knocked the stuffing out of Ashford’s youngsters and not even pushing Pat Kingwell forward in the closing stages could save Ashford from defeat.

Three home defeats to start their come back season at this level isn’t what the Homelands faithful will have wanted before the start of the
season, but then again, few would have thought that a month into the new campaign, their side would have a new boss and so many new
players.
