Andrews makes Gills move

Gillingham have been busy on Deadline Day as it’s been confirmed that two strikers have arrived as two leave the Club.

Steven Clemence and his backroom staff have been working tirelessly to get signings over the line and have announced that Josh Andrews and Jorge Cabezas Hurtado have joined the Club and will be in the squad for Saturday’s home game with Walsall subject to the appropriate Football League approval.

Andrews has been on loan from his parent Club Birmingham City at League Two rivals Accrington Stanley and played against the Gills at Priestfield back in August. The six foot five centre forward has come up through the ranks at St Andrews where Clemence was Club Captain during his own playing career.

Either side of the COVID seasons, the 22 year old has had loan spells with Harrogate Town, Rochdale and Doncaster Rovers before moving to Accrington last summer.

Andrews comes to Priestfield on a permanent deal and for an undisclosed fee. Having signed on at Gillingham, the striker said:

“I am delighted, I am looking forward to getting started. You want to join a club with a plan, this club clearly has that and I’m on board.”

“I can’t wait. I will give 100% every time I pull on the shirt; the fans can expect a target man that is going to take care of the ball, always try and be available for the team to get them up the pitch and when crosses are delivered into the box I will be on the end of them.”

Cabezas Hurtado has joined the Gills on loan until the end of the season from Watford and becomes the first Columbian ever to play League football in Kent.

The six foot striker originally joined Watford in 2023 on a five year contract after agreeing terms before the previous Christmas, from Real Cartegena in his homeland of Columbia.

The Hornets then loaned him straught back to the Columbians and Cabezas Hurtado also has experience in the MLS for New York Red Bulls and joins Gillingham until the end of the season.

He has been capped twenty times by his country at under 20 level and was part of the Columbian squad that hosted the 2023 South American Championship before being named in the squad for the 2023 under 20 World Cup that was held in Argentina.

It has also been confirmed that Macauley Bonne and Tom Nichols have both left Priestfield on Deadline Day to Cambridge United and Mansfield Town respectively.
