Andrews keen to score more Gills goals

Josh Andrews heads for South Wales this weekend looking for more goals to fire Gillingham into Monday’s Emirates FA Cup second round draw after netting ultimately in vain in last weekend’s defeat to Salford City.

The giant striker was speaking to KSN at this week’s briefing and told us, “We’ve been positive this week in training; the result we wanted at the weekend was not what we wanted in the slightest, but the performance overall was quite positive – we had a lot of chances in the game, but football is a game of moments and the moments definitely went against us at the weekend.”

“We’re all looking forward to the FA Cup – everyone knows the history of the Cup, it is a great competition and we are looking forward to it!”

“Without doubt, there are definitely moments that have gone against us in the last four or five games. When you break it down and look at the stats it shows a different story that we are not getting what we possibly deserve.”

“You’re going to have runs in football – we have just come off an incredible run just before and we are trying our hardest to get back to winning ways!”

“Got a couple of memories already the Cup – I scored when I was on loan for Rochdale against Notts County at their place – it was a nice goal, and it was great to have my parents at the ground watching!”

Andrews was the Gills scorer last weekend with a sweet strike that found the bottom corner of the Salford net – a strike that the big striker clearly enjoyed.

“I think technique wise it’s right up there for goals that I have scored,” he admitted. “Normally I head them in and don’t remember the last time I scored with my foot!”

Gillingham won 3-1 at Newport six weeks ago, but that’s not a result that matters to Andrews come three o’clock Saturday afternoon as he explained, “When we last went there it was the game that got us the Club record for an unbeaten League run so it was a nice memory, but every game in football is different – even though we beat them last time, we know that we will have to step it up a bit to beat them again in the FA Cup.”

Andrews returned to the side last weekend from suspension and when we asked why it was always the striker who gets booked in clashes with defenders, he joked, “It’s a good question! In today’s game, you can get a yellow card for a lot of things compared from ten/fifteen years ago – they are a lot easier to pick up over the past few seasons!”

“Physicality is a big part of my game and so I cannot say that yellows are negatives but it does show that I am putting myself about, that is how I would like to try and spin it anyway!” the six foot eight striker joked.
