Gillingham manager Martin Allen will give Barry Fuller and Curtis Weston the pre-season to earn themselves new deals at Priestfield.

The pair were both out of contract at the club at the end of last season, with Weston initially named amongst those that had been released by The Gills, but the 25 year old midfielder will be given every chance to impress the new manager.

Weston originally signed for Gillingham in the summer of 2008 from Leeds United and has made 167 appearances for the club in the past four years, scoring 19 goals in the process.

Meanwhile, former skipper Barry Fuller is back training with the club after having missed most of last season with a knee injury that required surgery.

The 27 year old right back has, like Weston, been given every chance to prove his fitness with The Gills this summer with a view to earning a new deal with the club.

Fuller signed for The Gills from Stevenage in January 2008 and has found his time at Priestfield frustrated by injury and illness. The Ashford born defender has suffered from a broken nose, broken arm and even missed a few months with a bout of pneumonia.

Since signing for the club, Fuller has played 151 times, but as yet is still waiting to score his first competitive goal for Gillingham.

Fuller will be part of the squad that travels to Le Touquet for a four day training camp on Thursday and is expected to play some part in the club’s pre-season campaign.

Meanwhile, Gillingham have handed a trial to former Barnet midfielder Mark Hughes after he was released by their new manager Mark Robson.

Hughes has spent the last three years at Underhill and worked under Martin Allen at the end of last season. He scored the goal that kept Barnet in the Football League, but that wasn’t enough to secure a new deal at the club and is training with The Gills with a view to earning a deal.

A Northern Irish international, Hughes could well bolster a Gillingham midfield that has seen a number of senior players leave in the summer, with the 28 year old again set to play some part in pre-season.
