Aldershot v Welling United preview

After two consecutive postponements, Welling United hope to be back in action on Saturday.

They are due to visit National League club, Aldershot, in the F.A. Trophy. The Shots have also been victims of the weather and have gone even longer than Welling without a game.

Warren Feeney’s Wings’ last outing was a two-one defeat at home to Farnborough. In that game, they were second best for large parts of the game but claimed an equaliser when Yaser Kasim’s shot came out for Stefan Payne to finish.

Welling then looked the more likely winners but were hit by a sucker-punch with seconds remaining in stoppage time.

It was a better outcome for Aldershot when they played their most recent game on the first Saturday in December. They made the long trip to Gateshead for a lunchtime kick-off and came back with a two-nil victory. As a result, they are six points clear of the relegation zone.

This will be their first game in the competition, however, Welling have already got through one tough game when inflicting a first away defeat of the season on Havant and Waterlooville. Ade Azeez gave the Wings a two-goal lead within twenty-five minutes, but the scores were level by midway through the second half.

Welling weren’t to be denied, though, and when Taylor Maloney’s thunderbolt hit the bar, Payne followed up to head home.

Azeez may not have recovered from an injury inflicted at Bath City in time for the game at Aldershot so loan signing Daniel Nkrumah may be offered a first start for the team.

The match kicks-off at 12:30 and should Welling be successful, it will be the first time they have progressed into the new year since 2017.
