Dipo Akinyemi scored the only goal as Welling United claimed a vital three points on Saturday and spoke of his pride at scoring goals for the side.

Akinyemi has scored fourteen league goals this season including ten in fourteen games since the turn of the year. Modestly, he said “It’s just being in the right place at the right time, that’s all it is. At the moment I’m in very good form and I don’t want to stop scoring, to be honest, and to try and get us out of trouble.

“You just have to graft. Today I played on the left and I just wanted to make sure I made that back post, that late run, and it fell to me nicely for once and I tapped it in. If the other wide player’s got it, you’ve just got to make sure that you get in the box and that’s exactly what I’m there for. If I score, the team ha\s a chance, that’s how I see it.”

He continued “I’ve played on the left before. When you play down the middle you don‘t do as much running as you do when you play down the left. It was tough to adjust to as I haven’t played there in a very long time but as long as I get in the box it doesn’t matter. I’ll do the job.”

It has been a difficult week for all at Welling with eight players in and five out. Akinyemi said “When a new manager comes in, he wants to play his sort of players. Peter (Taylor) was lovely to work with but it’s just where we are at the moment. That’s the situation we’re in. Everyone’s here. It’s going to be hard competing for the shirt. It’s not about how we play, it’s about collecting as many points as possible.

“It’s going to be a dog-fight to the end. Eight cup finals. It’s been a tough week anyway with the amount of players coming in. You have to get bonding with people you haven’t played with before. Teams around us are putting a shift in too as they don’t want to get relegated either.”

New manager Warren Feeney is busy trying to sign players before the 24th March transfer dead-line but joked “A big worry is keeping Dipo, my goal machine” Akinyemi smiled and said “That’s the nature of being a striker. When you score goals you attract interest. A goal when you win is so much better than a goal when you lose.”
