AFC Wimbledon v Gillingham preview

If ever there was a six pointer, tonight is just that as Stephen Clemence takes his Gillingham side to face play-off rivals AFC Wimbledon at Plough Lane.

With only a point seperating the two sides, The Gills go into the game sitting seventh in League Two, occupying the final play-off spot, but the home side will go into the game as favourites after pulling off a 2-0 win at Notts County on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Gillingham could only manage a 1-1 draw with Tranmere Rovers at Priestfield, Conor Masterson scoring a late equaliser to rescue a point.

Indeed, both sides could have won in at the death and Gillingham will count themselves unlucky as a Tim Dieng goal was ruled out for an apparent handball, but on closer inspection, it looked like a legitimate goal.

Putting that aside, over 1000 travelling Gillingham fans will head to South West London this evening hoping to cheer their side on to three massive points.

A win and their destiny is very much back in their own hands with only eight games left to play, but lose and things are starting to look tricky securing a play-off spot with games fast running out and teams behind them having games in hand.

Clemence has a real conundrum as to who starts tonight with the side looking tired and lacklustre in the past few games.

The likes of Scott Malone and George Lapslie may come into contention for a starting place, but Clemence may be tempted to keep faith with the same side that started against Tranmere and stick with the 5-3-2 formation that he has favoured in recent months.

Whoever does start, Gillingham fans will be hoping for a more energised performance and will more fight from their side.

The business end to the season sorts out the men from the boys as the saying goes and it’s at this time that we will really see what this Gillingham squad are made of.
