AFC Wimbledon 2-0 Cray Valley PM

A missed penalty in each half when the scores were level proved crucial as Cray Valley Paper Mills’ London Senior Cup run was ended at AFC Wimbledon at the semi-final stage.

Marcel Barrington in the first half, and Kevin Lisbie in the second, each had spot kicks saved as the Millers lost out in their hopes of reaching the final.

The first chance went to the hosts when Corie Andrews burst through down the inside left channel but Joe Docherty stood firm and made the block.

At the other end Marcel Barrington used his strength to hold off his man but was unable to slide his shot beyond Matthew Cox.

Ade Adeyemo thought that he had put the visitors ahead when he tuned in Lisbie’s cross shot but he had strayed offside before the Millers were awarded their first penalty.

Ben Mason handled in the box and a spot kick was awarded. Barrington stepped up but England under 18 goalkeeper, Matthew Cox went the right way and made the save.

Obed Yeboah tried a chip but it floated wide then Elliott Bolton flashed a header just beyond the post from David Kawa’s cross before the first half came to a close.

Continuing where they left off, the Dons won a string of corners early in the second period but Cray defended them well and Docherty was only called into action when making a comfortable save from Kawa’s header.

It was not all one way though and in the Millers’ next attack they were again awarded a penalty when Ryan King-Elliott was brought down by Jack Madelin. This time Lisbie took the responsibility but again Cox went the right way and made the save.

Barrington worked his way to the bye-line and chipped it back over Cox but Mason got back to head off the line before the hosts again came close. Docherty made a save from Kawa and from the follow up, Matthew Warren blocked Isaac Ogundere’s shot off the line.

However, their escape was short-lived as the Dons broke the deadlock with eleven minutes remaining. A corner was not cleared and when Kwaku Frimpong’s header was blocked out it fell nicely for Andrews and he fired home.

Marcel Campbell went a long run but shot wide before Cray substitute Jack Sammoutis’ twenty yard shot was deflected but Cox did well to get down and make the save.

Docherty made an excellent save tipping over Dylan Adjei-Hersey’s header before Warren curled a free kick over from a wide angle.

One minute remained when the Dons made sure of the victory when Andrews gave Docherty no chance with a superb finish.

Kyreece Lisbie burst through and was brought down as he shaped to shoot but the referee chose to keep his card in his pocket. Sammoutis took the free kick but was off target but it would have been too little too late as the final whistle was blown soon after.
