Charlton were without Igor Vetokele on Saturday, but the Angolan hitman will be fit for this weekend’s game with Cardiff.

Jose Riga had a strange looking bench against Bristol City, which included two central defenders.

Surprisingly, neither of the deadline day signings – Rod Fanni and Yaya Sanogo – even made the bench. Riga hinted at his Thursday press conference that the duo would sit the game out.

He suggested that the pair needed to get to know their teammates before they could be included. Riga was less than gushing about his new arrivals, leading to speculation that they were not his choices.

Both Fanni and Sanoko would appear to have been brought in as cover, rather than to provide the instant impact the team desperately need.

North London sources have suggested that Sanoko was not the Arsenal striker that the Addicks originally enquired about.

The emergency loan window opens on Tuesday, and will give Riga a quick opportunity to boost his squad.

Thus far, serious rumours are thin on the ground, with Gunners winger, Serge Gnabry, appearing to be the only one with much substance.

Gnabry returned to the Emirates in January, following a loan spell at West Brom. Brighton are also reported to be interested in the German wide man.

It seems likely that Arsene Wenger would prefer a move to a Premier or top Championship club for his young protégé.

It will be an anxious few days for Charlton fans, as they await news of arrivals to boost their team’s survival chances. The early signs suggest that Riga may have to rely on what he has for the clash with Cardiff.

The Addicks’ Under-21 team were beaten in the Premier League Cup quarter-final game at Huddersfield on Monday afternoon.

Josh Umerah opened the scoring for Charlton, after an Anfernee Dijkstell shot came back off the post.

Huddersfield levelled with a Duane Holmes penalty. Extra-time could not separate the two sides, and the game had to be decided on penalties.

Ezri Konsa’s miss was decisive, as the Terriers won the shoot-out 5-4.
