Gillingham 1-4 Grimsby Town

Grimsby Town produced an excellent second-half performance to secure a convincing 4-1 victory over Gillingham at Priestfield on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors made a fast start and took the lead after just seven minutes when Harvey Rodgers unleashed a superb strike from distance that flew into the top corner past Ollie Wright. The home side gradually worked their way back into the match and equalised in the 37th minute. Garath McCleary threaded a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Ronan Hale, who finished calmly to make it 1-1.

The game changed shortly after half time however, and not in a good way for Gillingham. Grimsby regained the lead in the 54th minute when Iwan Morgan converted from the penalty spot after Kieran Green was brought down in the area by Armani Little. The Mariners then tightened their grip on the contest, with Géza Turi adding a third goal on 63 minutes from close range.

Any hopes of a Gillingham comeback were ended in the 70th minute when substitute Sonny Finch raced through and finished neatly after being played in by Turi.

The result gave Grimsby a deserved away victory, while Gillingham were left frustrated after conceding three second-half goals and slipping to defeat in terrible conditions at Priesfield.
