Mitchell excited for new challenge

Jack Mitchell recently announced that he is taking on a new challenge on the British GT grid for the 2020 season, when it finally gets underway.

He will be making the move to the Beechdean team and racing behind the wheel of a brand new Aston Martin Vantage GT3, a challenge that has left him excited.

Mitchell has been speaking to Kent Sports News about a tough season in 2019 and that excitement for the 2020 season, when it gets started, hopefully in June.

He said: “It was definitely my hardest season to date. Coming off the back of 2018 where I won both championships in GT4, the aim was to keep the momentum going in GT3 but sadly it wasn’t meant to be.

“We had many issues with the car throughout the year but it kept me on my toes and made me dig deep to find more in myself which has definitely improved me as a driver.”

The main highlights of a challenging season for Jack were his home round at Brands Hatch and the final round of the season at Donington Park, where he netted podium finishes.

He added: “I would say they were the only two highlights of the year. Brands was definitely my favourite of the year because it’s so close to home and I had all my friends and family there to watch.

Both I and the team had put everything into that season so it was nice to finally come away with some silverware.”

2020 represents a new challenge, a fresh start and fresh optimism for Mitchell as he is eager to get on track in the Aston Martin.

“I’ve very excited to get started. I’m looking forward to driving the new Aston Martin Vantage GT3 on the U.K. circuits. It won the championship last year so I’m definitely in a good position. My team mate Valentin is a very established driver with a good track record so I feel it’s a strong partnership.

“After the first test I knew I was in a good place. The team is put together very well and it’s a very professional outfit and I feel it’s a place I can strive and improve as a driver.

“I’ve had a lot of dealing with Aston Martin (Prodrive) who look after Beechdean so I already have a good working relationship with a lot of the guys and girls there.”

Mitchell was out on track for media day and he had time behind the wheel and was impressed with what he has seen so far.

He added: “The car was everything I expected and more. I didn’t manage many laps but the car gave me so much confidence. The traction off the corners was amazing and something that will come into play on the UK circuits.”

Finally we asked Jack if he had set any targets for the 2020 season or whether it was just about enjoying the racing.

He said: “I feel we have a good chance for the championship. The British GT Championship is such a close championship and it always goes down to the wire.

“With myself, Valentin and Beechdean putting everything into it, I don’t see why we can’t be in the battle at the end of the season.”
