Wycombe Wanderers 0-1 Gillingham

The Gills left it late in the game to strike against Wycombe and ensure they came back to Kent with all three points.

Regan Charles-Cook was the hero for the Gils netting in the 83rd minute in a 1-0 win that saw the Gills move five points clear of the relegation zone.

Gills boss Steve Lovell made just the one change from the midweek defeat to Sunderland with Darren Oldaker dropping to the bench and Billy Bingham coming in to replace him.

The Gills defence knew they were in for a battle as lining up in the Wycome eleven was former striker Adebayo Akinfenwa.

It was Akinfenwa who had the first chance of the game, but he directed his header well wide of Tomas Holy’s post.

He was causing the Gills defence all sorts of problems, and five minutes after his first chance he nearly broke the deadlock. He turned and hit his shot on the volley but, Holy got down and tipped it round the post for a corner.

The Gills first real chance came in the 23rd minute, new signings Graham Burke and Leo da Silva Lopes linked up well, they found Luke O’Neill who crossed into the area. His cross was met by Tom Eaves but he headed just over the bar, not that it would have counted as the linesman’s flag was raised for offside against the Gills striker.

Akinfenwa had the next chance and should have put the home side in front. Jason McCarthy drove into the Gills penalty box and put a ball into the path of Akinfenwa, his effort though went high over the cross bar.

Brendan Hanlon test the keeper for the first time in the 38th minute, when he latched onto a loose ball and hit his shot from outside the area. A deflection off a Wycombe defender made it an easy save for Allsop in goal.

Half-Time: Wycombe 0-0 Gillingham

Dean Parrett who came on just before half time for Billy Bingham, had the first chance of the second half for the Gills. He latched onto a throw in beating Anthony Stewart and forcing McCartney to clear for a corner. The corner was cleared as far as Parrett but he fired his show over the bar.

Parrett was pulling the strings in the midfield and look to get the Gills counter attacking at every opportunity that he could.

Wycombe could have taken the lead on the hour mark. Allsop sent his kick down field, it was headed down by Akinfenwa, that header found Scott Kashket, his effort was straight at Holy.

With just seven minutes on the clock the Gills were ahead, Holy’s kick up field and found Hanlon, he took on Jombati. His cross was sent into the Wycome area and was met by Charles-Cook who bundled the ball into the back of the net.

Wycombe were nearly back on level terms straight from the restart a cross into the Gills area was met by that man Akinfenwa, but his header was saved by Holy and with Dominic Gape lurking the Gills clearered their lines.
