Welling United v Wealdstone preview

Following Tuesday night’s defeat, Welling United look to bounce back immediately as they entertain Wealdstone.

On Tuesday, Welling lost 2-0 at St. Albans City allowing Billericay Town to return to the summit of the Vanarama National League South. Saturday’s visitors, Wealdstone, will give them an equally tough challenge. They are just three points behind the Wings in a tight top six.

Steve King, Welling’s manager, watched their Monday night match against Gloucester City as start of his preparations. It’s likely that Stones manager Bobby Wilkinson, or one of his management team will have been at St. Albans watching the Wings on Tuesday evening.

As well as losing the match, Welling’s awful luck with injuries struck again as they have now lost the services of Josh Hill for a spell as x-rays have revealed that he has broken his hand. Better news is that Richard Orlu is fit and Anthony Acheampong is back in training.

Montel Agyemang has impressed in his two games so far and has now signed for Welling and Gavin McCallum should be available again.

There may be one familiar face to Welling supporters as Jeffrey Monakana is now at Wealdstone. However, he has been injured recently and may not be ready to return.

In the corresponding fixture last season, Monakana was in the Welling side but it was the visitors who won the game. They were the better side in the first half and deserved the lead given to them by Ryan Sellers after thirty-six minutes.

Referee Jack Packman awarded a highly contentious penalty three minutes after the break and Daniel Green stepped up to convert confidently. It became even harder for Welling when Packman dismissed Ben Jefford but that seemed to galvanise Welling and Jack Parkinson reduced the arrears.

Despite their pressing Welling couldn’t find a leveller and might have conceded a third in injury tome when Dan Fitchett hit the post.

That was just over a year ago, and only Bradley Goldberg from that day’s Wings squad is likely to be involved in Saturday’s match so it should have little bearing on the outcome of this one.

Due to floodlight issues the game will kick off at 13:00.
