Welling United v Eastbourne Borough – Preview

Following a ten day break, Welling United return to action with a home game against Eastbourne Borough.

In their last outing, Welling were defeated by title chasing Woking but they could consider themselves unlucky to come away empty handed. They went in at the break one down but they had a real go in the second half and had Josh Hill’s header gone in, instead of hitting the inside of the post but not crossing the line, they might well have gone on to win.

As the game came to a close, Woking mounted a counter-attack and, with the aid of a huge deflection, they added a second and put the result beyond doubt.

Saturday’s visitors, Eastbourne Borough, had won two on the spin before they were held at home by  Weston-super-Mare on Saturday. However, before that they had lost four league games and an F.A, Trophy tie, the latter particularly hurtful being a four-nil defeat at home to Dorchester Town.

Back in August, Welling visited the south coast on a Tuesday evening and tumbled to a one-nil defeat. It was a strange game as Lloyd Dawes scored an early goal for the hosts but after that it was almost totally one way traffic. To their credit, the Sports defended bravely and made several last ditch tackles and blocks. Welling also hit the woodwork on a number of occasions but were unable to find the net.

Steve King might have an interesting challenge to field a sixteen man squad on Saturday. He only had sixteen players available at Woking and since then Matt Paterson has departed to join Havant and Waterlooville. He will be hoping that one of his walking wounded is available to return or he might add a youth team player to the party.

When the two teams met at Park View Road, Welling enjoyed a three-nil victory. Olumide Durojaiye scored in the ninth minute and the Wings then coasted through the game. However, until they scored the second goal, the Wings’ faithful could not relax.

That came with eleven minutes to go when Elliott Romain hassled a defender into making a hasty back pass. Romain chased it down and when Sports’ goalkeeper tried to hoof it away, he could only whack it straight at Romain and it rebounded back into the empty net.

Romain scored a more conventional goal in injury time when heading home from Jack Jebb’s cross.

Welling will be looking for three points again on Saturday or they may drop out of the play-off zone.
