Welling United v Chester preview

Following another two week break, Welling United return to action on Saturday with a home match against Chester F.C.

FOOTBALL (WELLING HOME)

It has been a strange period of the season for the Wings. They played four games in nine days with a threadbare squad over the festive season. Since then, they have played just one game in 27 days.

That game was a 3-2 home defeat to Alfreton Town where the Wings started very slowly. Manager Jody Brown felt the team were lacking in match sharpness and has taken steps to avoid that happening again by playing a friendly against Reading Under 21s at their training ground on Tuesday.

Last Saturday, four first team squad members played for the Welling reserve side in a Suburban League match in front of the watchful Brown.

As revealed exclusively to Kent Sports News, Brown has bolstered his squad again this week. Anthony Jeffrey, a former Arsenal academy footballer who has played football league games for Stevenage Borough and Wycombe Wanderers has been added to the squad.

He has also brought in the experience of Karl Duguid who played 414 games in two spells for Colchester United sandwiched around 107 appearances for Plymouth Argyle.

Chester have pulled themselves away from the relegation zone with two wins in quick succession, the second being an impressive 4-0 victory over Lincoln City on Tuesday night.

When the two teams met on the English/Welsh border earlier in the season, Welling were indebted to a Tyrone Marsh injury time goal to snatch a vital point after Craig Mahon had given the Blues a 10th minute lead.

Brown and his assistant Glen Little will be informing all of their short term aims and plans for further in the future at a Meet the Manager event on the evening before the Chester match. It will be held in the Eric Brackstone Lounge above the Wings Sports Bar at Welling’s Park View Road ground.
