Welling United 3-2 Truro City

Coming into the game, both Welling United were keen to pick up the points that would allay any doubt surrounding their future participation in the Vanarama National League South.

At the end of the ninety plus minutes, it was Welling that were able to celebrate their survival having completed a come from behind victory.

Setting out with a 4-4-3 system, the White Tigers took the game to their hosts in the early stages of the game but the Welling defence proved hard to penetrate.

It took twenty minutes for either side to create a goal scoring opportunity, but Chris Todd was well off target with what turned out to be their only goal attempt in the first half.

Eventually, Welling came into the game and Dan Walker twice created opportunities for Alex Cathline. The first was a first time near post effort that flew wide. The second was on target but lacked the power to trouble Tom McHale.

As Welling continued to look for an opening and went ahead from a free kick. Rhys Murrell-Williamson delivered and Ben Martin rose to head home.

Sam Hatton fired over an Walker had a shot saved before Welling shot themselves in the foot two minutes before the interval. Niall Thompson found Andrew Neal and he crossed into an area of uncertainty that resulted in Martin passing back beyond goalkeeper Chris Lewington and into his own net.

Four minutes into the second half it went from bad to worse for Welling  A good swift Truro break ended with Neal finishing from Dan Smith’s low cross.

Hatton fired a shot in that was cleared off the line just out of the reach of Phil Walsh then Murrell-Williamson had a free kick saved.

Danny Waldren and Walker were off target for Welling and in a rare raid at the other end Cody Cooke also failed to trouble the goalkeeper.

An increasing number of Truro fouls eventually proved costly when Murrell-Williamson curled a free kick into the bottom corner.

Two minutes later, Welling went ahead when substitute Tyrone Marsh burst through and fired home in style.

Smith fired well wide for Truro before Alex Cathline struck the post deep into injury time with McHale well beaten.

Victory took Welling up to fourteenth in the table, the highest they have been all season.
