Welling United 2-0 Corinthian Casuals
Welling United 2-0 Corinthian Casuals

Although Welling won 2-0 in their London Senior Cup tie with Corinthian-Casuals, the match was marred by what appeared to be a bad injury to Casuals’ full back Warren Morgan.

There was quarter of an hour left on the clock when he went down as a result of an innocuous looking challenge from Gavin McCallum and the treatment took fifteen minutes before he was stretchered off.

Several Welling fringe players were given some playing time with goalkeeper Mohammed Hajizadeh making his Welling first team debut.

McCallum appeared in the mood from the word go and first fired low into the side netting before another was deflected over the cross-bar.

After thirteen minutes Welling went ahead. Richard Orlu’s header crashed back off the bar. It was half cleared but only as far as Kyjuon Marsh-Brown and his first touch opened it up before he fired home from the edge of the penalty area.

Danny Bracken, on his return from injury, made an outstanding save to stop Anthony Acheampong from doubling Welling’s lead before excellent last ditch defending by Reece Hannigan halted Danny Mills who would have been through on goal.

Juevan Spencer tested the Welling debutant goalkeeper with a low driven cross but Hajizadeh held it comfortably.

At the interval Julien Anau had to be withdrawn with a hamstring injury to be replaced by Montel Agyemang.

Continuing in his mission to find the net McCallum had a shot blocked before he added a second for the Wings with an excellent effort from twenty-five yards that had Bracken grasping at thin air.

Casuals refused to lay down and started to cause problems of their own with Coksum Ekim pulling the strings in midfield.

Mu Maan was thwarted by an outstanding save by Hajizadeh and the goalkeeper was again in action soon after saving from Hamilton Antonio.

Montel sent a curler just wide for the Wings before McCallum was again in action but he shot straight at a grateful Bracken.

Antonio fired across the face of goal but the game started to fizzle out with multiple substitutions breaking the flow. Then came the terrible injury to Morgan.

When the game restarted in what should have been the ninetieth minute, fifteen minutes of injury time had to be played.

Former Dartford and VCD Athletic striker Warren Mfula cut in and had a shot saved for Casuals then Marsh-Brown had a shot deflected just wide for Welling with Bracken a spectator.

Hakeem Adelakun had the last opening of the match when working himself into a good position for Casuals but launching his shot into the car park.
