Welling United 1-2 Hampton & Richmond Borough

Coming into this game, Welling United had guaranteed safety but visitors Hampton and Richmond Borough had been given an unexpected chance of the play-offs.

Although there were fine margins, the visitors had just a little more desire and won the game as a result.

Most of the game was uneventful and there were few clear cut chances, especially in the first half.

Alex Cathline had a shot for Welling beaten out by Sam Howes then Duncan Culley was off target for Hampton.

Cathline again came close when bringing down Rhys Murrell-Williamson’s cross before shooting wide on the turn and Rickie Hayles was unable to redirect a Danny Waldren free kick towards goal.

Culley then had a great chance for Hampton but his low drive was saved brilliantly by Chris Lewington.

Ali Fuseini tried his luck from distance but Sam Howes saved comfortably before Hampton captain fired a thirty yarder just over.

That was as good as it got in the first half and things didn’t change much immediately after the break.

Culley was again thwarted by Lewington before Dan Walker fired well over with a hopeful effort.

Lewington had to be alert to punch over a Sam Gallagher free kick before Walker had two more half chances.

First he headed over from a Waldren free kick then he had a shot deflected wide following a quick break by Rhys Murrell-Williamson.

Christian Jolley had a shot well saved by Lewington before Hampton went ahead when Stiven Rivic got the final touch at the end of a goalmouth scramble.

Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick should have made it two when side footing wide from close range before Welling scored a sensational equaliser.

Murrell-Williamson curled an inch perfect free kick beyond Howes with just two minutes remaining.

He then went on another run but had his shot blocked when he might have pulled it back before Hampton claimed the winner.

A long punt forward evaded the last line and Rivic ran on to score the winner. The Hampton bench ran on to the pitch looking like they had won the World Cup but they still have a long way to go before they get promoted.

As for Welling, they will be happy to get the game at Bath City over next Saturday. To finish a disappointing league campaign.
