Welling United 0-2 Charlton Athletic

Newly promoted Charlton Athletic claimed the Eric Brackstone Trophy with a two nil victory at Welling United.

First half goals from Brendan Sarprong-Wiredu and Abraham Odou proved sufficient for Charlton who changed ten players at the break.

Although there was silverware at stake, preparation for the 2019-20 season is of greater importance so the result was largely inconsequential.

Addicks new signing Macauley Bonne had the first half chance of the match but fired wide of the near post. Odoh was then crowded out before Welling had to make an early change. Adam Coombes had already been stretching out and went off to be replaced by Aaron Cosgrave as a precaution.

Shortly afterwards Welling had their first attempt at goal when Nathan Green cut inside and let fly but Dillon Phillips made a comfortable save.

Within less than a minute, Charlton went ahead. Naby Sarr hit a sixty yard diagonal pass that picked out Sarpong-Wiredu who killed it with his first touch before firing an unstoppable shot beyond Welling goalkeeper Dan Wilks.

Sarpong-Wiredu came close again when throwing himself at Albie Morgan’s free kick but his flying header flew over.

After thirty-four minutes, Charlton were gifted a second. Odoh caught a Welling player dithering and burst through before firing home off the inside of the post.

Bonne headed wide and then over before Wilks did superbly to save at the feet of Odoh as he tried to finish a long threaded ball down the left wing by Lewis Page.

At the break Sanchez Ming, who had taken an earlier knock, was replaced by Aaron Barnes for Welling whilst only Junior Quitirna started both halves for Charlton.

Taylor Maloney’s cross-field pass was controlled well by Alfie Doughty but he fired across the face of goal

Lyle Taylor then came within inches of making it three but his powerful drive flew back off the crossbar.

Bradley Goldberg was then brought down just outside the penalty area but Anthony Cook’s free kick clipped the last man in the wall and went wide for a corner which came to nothing.

Jake Forster-Caskey came on for Quitirna and had a shot saved comfortably before Taylor sent him through again but Wilks made a great save with his outstretched leg.

Green had a shot deflected wide after good work by Goldberg then a Jack Jebb free kick was flicked on by Magnus Ojkuonghae but beyond the far post.

Maloney fired wide for Charlton from twenty-five yards but Welling finished the stronger. A foul on Cook allowed Jebb the opportunity to take a free kick but although he got it over the wall, Ashley Maynard-Brewer got across well to save.

Cook at one final effort but his side-footed effort flew just over.

It was a good work-out for the Wings whose next friendly is at Glebe on Thursday evening.
