Warrilow keen to continue run

Ashford United welcome Greenwich Borough to Homelands this weekend with the home side keen to keep their good run going whilst Borough will be desperate to not have a repeat of last Saturday home mauling by Herne Bay.

KSN caught up with Ashford boss Tommy Warrilow and started by asking him about last week’s win over Whitstable Town also at Homelands.

Warrilow told us, “It was a similar game to when we won at Faversham whereas in the first half, I wasn’t happy – and told them as much!  Reminded them that they had to up them tempo whilst at the same time how patience as they were trying to – and did – frustrate us!”

“But second half we dominated the game, but all the time it was only one nil and Whitstable being very direct, you hope that the chances that you keep missing don’t come back and haunt you.  We defended well to keep a clean sheet and then got a second to make it two nil and to be honest it really should have been more.”

Warrilow and Alex O’Brien have been in charge of Ashford since Gary Alexanders surprise departure, and Warrilow believes that the side is moving in the right direction.  He told us, “We have definitely made progress since we came in – we’ve brought in five players along with the ones there already although on Saturday we had injuries and suspensions which made the squad a bit weaker but overall the only game so far we didn’t turn up energy wise so far is the only game that we’ve lost.  So I’ve got no qualms that we lost the game because I know why we did but one loss I seven is a great return.”

“Weekend we play Greenwich Borough who seem to be struggling – obviously I don’t know the in’s and outs at the club; its only what I read, but hopefully it will all calm down and the club gets through it but it has been a tough year financially for a lot of clubs.  Obviously, I know that first hand from what happened with Thamesmead scenario – how disappointing it is when theres nothing left to try and sustain the club and I do hope that Greenwich Borough aren’t in the same situation.  Clubs position cant be helped by the way that games have been structured this season – we had one home game in December and things like that must be looked at as after all its not been the biggest League this year to administer, but with one home game in a month, it’s hard to keep sustaining clubs and their overheads when there aren’t any games to be played!”
