Roadsport title for Sales

Jack Sales - last roundJack Sales capped off an excellent season at the final round from Silverstone by sealing the Caterham Roadsport Championship.

Sales went into the final round of the season sitting in third place in the championship and without side shot at winning the title.

He took victory in the first race of the weekend on Saturday afternoon and then followed that up with victory on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking after the weekend and winning the title, a delighted Jack said: “It feels pretty good! I wouldn’t say I expected it, but it was certainly the target! It still hasn’t completely sunk in yet to be honest; the title was such a long shot coming into the weekend that I’m still a little shocked at winning the championship.

Sales had been right up there all season and but for a bad round in the previous race, winning the title wouldn’t be such a long shot.

He added: “I was leading on dropped scores going into Croft, then had a disaster there, so was third, 12 points back from the lead again on dropped scores which is a huge amount given there is a two point gap between finishing first and second, and a single point between the rest of the positions, also, an additional point is rewarded for the fastest lap.

“It was actually such a large gap that I wasn’t thinking about the championship going into the weekend; I just wanted to have fun and go for wins – so no pressure! Not until Sunday anyway, when I started to think about the championship.Jack Sales - Champion

“I went for wins and I got them. Even if I didn’t clinch the championship, getting another double win is the perfect end to the season!

“The close nature of the racing is one of the many draws of Caterham racing; it’s so hard to get away in the races, so you really need to keep on your toes and think your strategy through.”

With the championship sealed we asked Jack whether there was a favourite race weekend of the season that set him on his way to victory.

“There are a few weekends which were favourites of mine but they were all for different reasons. Rockingham was great because it was where I felt best in the car; I got pole by over 1/3 of a second without a tow from anyone, and that lap time would have put me third on the Tracksport grid, the class above mine.

“I loved Brands as it is my local track, I had lots of friends and family there watching and it was my first double win. Results wise, Zolder wasn’t spectacular third and second, but it was an incredible week away in the sunshine in a nice part of the world with some great people. Of course, Silverstone; a double win and wrapping up the championship, it doesn’t get much better than that.”Jack Sales - last round 2

With 2014 over it is already time for Jack to look forward to 2015 and he will be staying with Caterham’s but it is time to move up classes.

He said: “I’ll be in Caterham’s next year, moving up to the Tracksport championship we can only stay in Roadsport for one year, then have to move on. I’m hoping to get the budget together to do some winter testing for next year as I wasn’t quite fully up to speed when the season started this year, plus a bit of testing in the winter alleviates some of the boredom of the off-season.”
