Reading vs Gillingham – Preview

On Tuesday night Gillingham travel to Reading in the hope of progressing in the Carabao Cup.

The first round of the League Cup- which has renamed due to sponsorship this season- will see the Gills travel to the Madejski Stadium to face a Royals team who lost their opening game of the season at Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

Ady Pennock’s side will be looking to build on the foundations set from their 0-0 draw at Doncaster Rovers over the weekend. However, they’ll be without Bradley Garmston who Pennock announced will be out for six weeks after the full back missed out on the Doncaster match.

Conor Wilkinson came on off the bench on Saturday after his ankle injury, so it is expected that he is back in contention for a starting spot whilst centre back Alex Lacey and midfielder Aaron Morris are expected to be out after missing the trip to Yorkshire on Saturday.

With the exception of these three, Pennock has a full squad to select from.

The Gills could come up against an array of top quality players including Vito Mannone who recently signed from Sunderland and Manchester United youngster Tyler Blackett who is spending a season on loan in Berkshire.

The visitors haven’t seen a huge amount of success in the League Cup over the course of their history. They have only ever reached the third round under the competition’s current structure and tasted defeat in the second round last season against Birmingham. This could all change this season though as Pennock’s team travel west for Tuesday’s match.

Ticket information can be found on the club’s website and kick off is at 8pm.
