Raynor – Mandron decision to be made Monday

Gillingham assistant manager Paul Raynor has said a decision is likely to be made on Monday as to whether or not trialist Mikael Mandron will be offered a contract at the club.

Mandron has featured four times for Gillingham in pre-season and travelled with the side to a UK based training camp before they faced Folkestone in their second game of their warm up games.

The big striker has put in some impressive displays for Steve Evans’ side and was on the score sheet for The Gills in their 2-1 defeat against Millwall on Sunday. He also netted in a 4-0 win at Folkestone earlier on in the summer.

“A decision will be made” said Raynor, speaking to KentSportsNews after Sunday’s game.

“We need to be fair to Mikah as well. He’s got his future to think about so we will sit down and have a chat, probably tonight (Sunday) and tomorrow (Monday) and make the decision to be fair to him.”

Mandron scored 12 goals in 85 league games for his previous club Colchester across a two-year period and has also played for Wigan, Fleetwood and Sunderland.

Although his record isn’t blistering, he offers a possible alternative option for Gillingham, standing at 6ft 3 and posing more of a physical presence than the strikers already at the club.

“If we want to do something, we need to get cracking with that” Raynor added.

“We’ve still got to make that decision, but it’ll be made in the next couple of days I would imagine.”

News broke last week that Gillingham had bid a cash sum for an unnamed higher league striker. The situation was expected to be resolved before the Dartford fixture last Tuesday, but Raynor admitted that everything is still up in the air regarding the deal.

“I haven’t (heard anything)” said Raynor.

“Whether the gaffer and the chairman have heard anything (is another matter). I certainly haven’t at the moment, but we will wait and see and keep our fingers crossed on that one.”

Gillingham travel to Dover Athletic on Tuesday as their pre-season continues.
