No play again on day two at Worcester
No play again on day two at Worcester

Kent’s wait to start their County Championship campaign continues, after day two of their game at Worcestershire was again called off without a ball bowled.

New Road, Worcester, day two 2016

Play was ruled out for the second consecutive day when umpires Ian Gould and Richard Illingworth took an inspection at around 12:45pm, with heavy rain overnight still sitting on the surface of the ground despite a drier spell this morning.

With day one of the game yesterday also abandoned without any play possible, it is looking more and more likely that the entire game could be washed out by the weather. Worcestershire’s New Road ground is one that is well known for being susceptible to flooding, and indeed has at times been found completely submerged over the off-season.

The lack of play so far in this game could damage both sides’ promotion prospects for the coming campaign, with one county being promoted from Division Two, leaving victories at a premium.

The current situation somewhat echoes a game the 2007 fixture between the same sides at New Road, when the game was abandoned without a ball being bowled over the four days.
