MK Thunder 1-4 Invicta Dynamos

After a victorious win over the Wightlink Raiders on Saturday, the Invicta Dynamos came away from Milton Keynes with a good win under their belts to complete a four point weekend.

Due to the incidents after the Wightlink game, Invicta were missing Billy and Charlie Phillips as well as the injured Grant Baxter. Mark Lee once again padded-up to take the lead netminder role.

MK Thunder started better than the Invicta Dynamos in the opening minutes of the first period, with Arran Strawson having to dive flat on his body on 01:15 to cut-out a Piotr Poziomkowski pass across the goal with MK forwards at the waiting to accept an invitation to score.

MK forward Harrison Goode dribbled the puck past Danny Terry on 02:12 with only Mark Lee to beat, but his shot was padded away by the Dynamos netminder who was looking to match the form shown the previous night where he achieved a 97.56 save percentage.

Impressive MK forward Piotr Poziomkowski found the glove of Mark Lee on 03:43 after he intercepted a pass from Callum Fowler and shot from distance.

The Dynamos turned the play to the other end of the rink on 05:50 when Juraj Huska aimed the puck to the corner of Damien King’s goal, only for King to get his left leg pad in the way of the goal bound shot. Huska finally beat King on 05:50 after Anthony Leone slid the puck past two MK players and Huska casually lifted the puck past King to give the Dynamos the lead.

Invicta’s other import, Ilja Urushev played the puck out of the defence zone on 07:31 and sent Adam McNicoll accelerating towards the MK goal but the Scotsman’s shot was gathered by King. A few seconds later Frankie Harvey was unlucky not to double the lead when he hit the goal frame from a crowed goal area.

Ilja Urushev carried the puck behind the MK goal on 11:38, beating a few players to get to the front of the goal and shoot at King, with the puck coming off the chest of the netminder and into the back of the net to double the Invicta lead to two nil.

The Dynamos defended an Elliott Dewey slashing penalty shortly after Urushev’s first goal for the club and the efforts were rewarded with a third goal on 16:02. Andy Smith and Callum Fowler linked-up to set-up Adam McNicoll who fired past King to give the Scot his second away goal in as many games.

The second period produced no goals but the Dynamos were victims of two minute penalty calls against, Callum Fowler on 20:38 (hooking) and Anthony Leone on 22:53 (slashing).  Andy Smith tested King on 27:17 put the Dynamo forward was unable to beat King who also saved from McNicoll on 30:02 and Frankie Harvey on 31:10.

Invicta had a three-on five opportunity for just over a one minutes worth of play on 32:42 following penalty calls on MK’s Thomas Castle and Harrison Goode but Damien King and his defence held firm.

Callum Fowler was penalised on 39:48 for slashing, which further resulted in Arran Strawson receiving a ten minute misconduct call on the end of period buzzer as the match officials took no nonsense from the visitors.

It left the Dynamos defending a three-on five for just short of two minutes, which was successfully seen out – only for the Thunder to score seconds after the Dynamos were back to full strength with Connor Goode squeezing a shot past Mark Lee’s right leg on 43:08 with Jamie Randall claiming the assist.

Tom Mboya tested Mark Lee on 45 minutes as the Thunder stepped-up the pace to chase another goal but almost immediately Invicta switched the play to the other end of the play and Callum Fowler was the second Invicta forward to hit the goal frame with Damien King beaten.

With MK Thunder pushing the pressure on the Dynamos defence, Ilja Urushev cleverly lifted the puck over several players on 59:01 to send Callum Fowler breaking clear one-on-one with Damien King, but King stood-up well to deny Fowler the opportunity to kill the game.

That was to be the last part King played, with the Thunder pulling the netminder in favour of an extra forward and leave them with an unguarded net.

On 59:38, Ilja Urushev received the puck from Callum Fowler behind his defending face-off circle and shot from distance into the open MK net to send the visiting away supporters into rapturous applause for the import’s second goal of the game and fourth Invicta goal of the night.

Man of the match awards were handed out to Anthony Leone for the travelling Dynamos and Edward Knaggs for the hosts.

Mark Lee ended the night having faced 34 shots and a save percentage of 97.06.
