Mavericks looking for more players

The East Kent Mavericks are stepping up their preparations for the 2019 season with a series of recruitment days designed to identify new talent.

The Canterbury-based club is seeking to recruit new players from across the county to help develop the first team and potentially launch a second team in the future.

The Mavericks are targeting a tilt at the British American Football Association Division 2 South title when the season kicks-off in April and it’s not too late for budding Bradys and Beckhams to force their way onto the roster.

Open days will be held at Simon Langton Boys Grammar School on Nackington Road, Canterbury, each Sunday in September and October from 3pm-5pm with an eye on giving new players the opportunity to try the sport.

Head coach Glenn Lindley said: “We are looking to recruit as many new players as possible, as American Football requires a big team and an even bigger squad.

“No previous experience or specialist equipment is required, just a willingness to learn.  Any new faces are sure to be made very welcome.”

He added: “They will have the opportunity to try on equipment, learn the basics of the game and try out some different positions before, if they would like, moving on to some controlled hitting and contact drills.”

Potential players need only bring trainers or moulded boots, plus sportswear, for the session on the school’s state-of-the-art 4G artificial playing surface, though gum shields are required for those keen to pad-up for contact drills.
