Maidstone progress in Kent Senior Cup

Bromley exited the Kent Senior Cup at the first time of asking losing out to Maidstone on penalties in a game they took far too long to get going in and then failed to make their chances count late on.Kent Reliance Senior Cup

After a quiet start which saw little incident apart from Mitchell Pinnock hitting the bar with a header it was The Stones who took the lead on 22 minutes when Bradley Jordan’s excellent cross was headed home by an unmarked Mark Lovell.

Ben Greenhalgh nearly made it two soon after when he fired over after a strong run through midfield.

Bromley had plenty of possession, but created very little until late on in the half when Pinnock had an effort saved by Will Godmon and Adam Birchall had an effort deflected wide.

The second half saw Bromley start with more purpose, Birchall & Pinnock had an efforts saved and Pierre Jospeh Dubois had a shout for a penalty turned down after what looked like a hand ball in the six yard box by a Stones defender.

The Ravens momentum was given further impetus with the introduction of Moses Ademola and Louis Dennis who sparked a good spell of pressure.

Ademola had a header cleared off the line and Callum McNaughton fired over from the resulting corner, Dennis had a shot saved, Reece Prestedge chipped the ball over when well placed and Duncan Culley was also denied by Godmon before the break through eventually came on 88 minutes.

Ademola picked the ball up 25 yards out and played in Dennis with a superb pass for the young winger who then coolly placed his shot low into the coroner to equalise.

In injury time Bromley could have won it, but Pinnock and Dubois both had goal bound efforts deflected wide by brave defending from Maidstone’s back line.

Then came the penalties with Maidstone taking first, both sides missed their initial kicks, but The Stones then scored the next four while Bromley only hit the net with two giving the Ryman Premier side the win and a place in the next round.

Mark Goldberg rang the changes giving squad players a chance to prove themselves, but will have not learned too much from this game apart from the fact that certain players will need to step up their game to challenge the current starting first team.
