Lopes joins Gills on loan

With just minutes left of the January transfer window, Gillingham added a fourth player to their squad on transfer deadline day, with Leonardo Da Silva Lopes joining the club.

The 20-year-old joins the Gills on loan until the end of the season from Wigan Athletic, having signed for the club from Peterborough United in the summer.

Lopes joins the club looking to get some valuable game time and he could feature in the weekend fixture against Coventry City. He joined the Posh in 2014 having been playing in Portugal for his youth career.

He went onto score four goals for Peterborough in his 108 appearances for the club, before he then moved to the Latics in the summer, he has however only played three times for them this season.

Gills manager Steve Lovell was delighted to get his man and add him to the Gills squad for the rest of the season, speaking of the signing he said: ”

We are absolutely delighted to get this deal over the line; Leonardo is highly thought of at Wigan and I have been chasing the deal for quite some time. He has already played 100 games in the league and I’m sure he will be a terrific acquisition for us.”
