Leatherhead 2-0 Herne Bay
Leatherhead 2-0 Herne Bay

A disappointing performance today. But it seemed that nothing went our way. today; Matt Fry unavailable, wedding, Alex Mulrooney-Skinner away 21st birthday, Miles Cornwell involved in a car accident with whiplash injuries, Nick Reeves injured, Raphe Brown started but had a back injury and was substituted after 29 minutes.

The playing surface was worse than a municipal pitch, not allowing for any decent football to be be played.

Leatherhead made 9 changes to the team that played last Saturday bringing back five players that represented the club last season and they made all the opening play using long balls down the centre quick breaks down both flanks.

They took the lead in the 12th minute, after a rather uneventful opening ten minutes, and what a strange goal this was. The ball was bouncing around in the goal mouth with Bay failing to effectively clear it. Jordan Beeney stooped down at the near post to collect the ball but Shaun Okojie with his back to the goal casually back heeled the ball onto the post and it trickled over the line.

Despite the Tanners dominating the play there were no further threats on Beeney apart from when he let an innocuous cross slip through his hands.

Fortunately the ball passed harmlessly around the upright. The tanners biggest threat cam from full back, Thomas Cooney as time after time he was allowed to race down the left and put in dangerous crosses.

Bay only had one shot on goal in the first period, that coming from Simon Kamamba finishing off a good run, and one- two with Jake Embery, with a shot that unfortunately went too high over the crossbar.

Bay came more into the game in the second period as it seemed the new Leatherhead players began to tire although Beeney was forced into making a full length diving save to turn the ball around the post 10 minutes into the half. He was called upon to produce an even better one handed save twenty minutes later when Elliott Benton’s shot defected off Danny Rumbol towards the top corner.

Bay pressed but were always lacking in being able to penetrate Leatherheads’ solid back four in which William Nnamani and Daniel Gallagher were far too dominant.

Substitute Reece Deakin put the game to bed with 10 minutes left on the clock, when he sped towards goal and with Bays defenders standing off him, struck a fine volley wide of Beeney into the far corner.

Bradley Schafer then had Bays only real shot of the half which went passed the wrong side of the post. It was a case too little too late as Leatherhead ran out comfortable winners to progress into the next round £6,000 richer.
