How far could you run, jog or walk in a day was the question asked of athletes taking part in the 24 Hour Challenge ultra marathon.

The event, a multi-lap endurance held between Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th May saw 24 challengers take part, covering a combined distance of just under 1300 miles.

Set on a scenic course near Reculver in the beautiful countryside of East Kent, the 24 Hour Challenge provided the athletes with a safe 6.62 mile course allowing competitors the option of dropping out whenever they wish.

The course provided the athletes with a mixture of country paths and recently cut (and tricky to run on) grassy trails.

The event, normally known for its extremely hot weather conditions was comparably mild with cooler temperatures and light winds.

Brook Farm provided a fabulous HQ and checkpoint where runners could rest. In addition the race’s Marshall Spots named ‘Davis Dyke’ and ‘Jelly Baby Junction’ returned and were greatly enjoyed by the runners for their warm banter and hospitality, just what was needed over such a long race.

Some old friends returned to take on the challenge including seasoned ultra athlete Mal Smith who walked the course with walking sticks just 3 weeks after having a hip operation…what an inspiration. Mal promise to be back for the next event the 50 Mile challenge dragging a tyre, named Tommy, as part of his ultra training.

There were some great performances by all who took part with Ellen Cottom reaching the monumental 100 mile mark in the 24 hours. Ellen was awarded the Josette White Trophy for her achievement. She said, ‘This was my first Challenge Hub event and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it! Thank you for a great weekend.‘

Paul Thompson and Jeremy Smith both covered an amazing 83 miles in the time. Jeremy Smith said, ‘This was the best atmosphere of any race I’ve been involved in. Amazing marshals staying up all hours to offer a friendly face and words of encouragement. Great camaraderie among the runners. Thank you Challenge Hub for a brilliant weekend.’

Paul Thompson who was awarded the John White Trophy said, ‘The hardest thing I’ve ever done. Thanks everyone for your support and encouragement.’

Special merit also goes to Nicola Crossley and Russell Fordaham who were awarded the Redsell trophy for demonstrating effort throughout the 24 hours.

Mike Inkster, Director of Challenge Hub said, ‘Well done to all those who took part, you are all winners and I hope that you achieved your goals. The 24 Hour Challenges is not a traditional race.”

“Its purpose is to give individuals the opportunity to take on a challenge that tests both mental and physical fortitude which all the athletes have demonstrated over the last 24 hours’.

Challenge Hub’s next ‘Ultra’ is the 50 Mile Challenge on Sunday 10th July 2016. The date for next year’s night time ultra marathon the Moonlight Challenge has also been set for Saturday 11th February 2017.
