Kent clubs ready for new season

After 83 days without competitive football the season gets underway this weekend for the majority of Kent’s teams.

It has been twelve weeks since Ebbsfleet United’s playoff final victory in the National League South and they start 2017-2018 with a trip to Yorkshire to face Guiseley. It’s been a quiet week at Stonebridge Road following their 2-1 loss against Wimbledon last weekend but Daryl McMahon’s side will be looking for a comfortable win after an impressive summer of signings.

Elsewhere in the top tier, Dover face a longer trip to the North East to face recently relegated Hartlepool. The Whites have lost plenty of players over the last two months but have been boosted by the signing of winger Kadell Daniel after impressing over their pre-season campaign.

Bromley are the only National League side to start the season at home when they welcome Eastleigh to Hayes Lane. The Hayes Lane side have made one signing this week following their loss to a Crystal Palace XI and this comes at left back where Kristian Campbell joins the Ravens.

Maidstone are also back in action on Saturday. The face newly promoted Maidenhead United following their 3-0 win at home against a Southend United under 23 side last weekend.

There is also a full schedule of midweek fixtures in the upcoming week. The highlight of these comes on Tuesday night when Ebbsfleet welcome Maidstone to Stonebridge Road for the first time since Dean Saunders’ side won promotion there in 2016. Elsewhere there’s another all- Kent derby as Bromley host Dover.

Moving into the Southern section of the National League, Welling start their campaign with their furthest away trip of the season when they travel to Truro on Saturday. The Wings then have their opening home game on Tuesday night against Chelmsford. Jamie Coyle’s newest signing, winger Christian Nanetti, is available for both matches.

Dartford also get their season underway on Saturday when they welcome Hungerford to Princes Park on Saturday afternoon. The Darts then make the short trip across the Thames to face Braintree on Tuesday night.

The renamed Bostik leagues don’t begin until next weekend, but there is still plenty of competitive action to watch over the weekend in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup. Kent’s action kicks off on Friday night when Crowborough Athletic play their first competitive game at the Gallagher Stadium. They welcome Southern Counties side Lingfield to Maidstone. Also looking for the £1,500 for advancing are Deal when they travel to Corinthian and Hollands and Blair when they make the trip to Hassocks FC.

Other ties include Sheppey United vs Croydon Athletic, Sutton Common Rovers vs Canterbury City, Tunbridge Wells vs Beckenham Town, Sevenoaks vs Broadbridge Heath and Glebe vs Lordswood. The final tie involving a Kent side comes from Whitstable Town’s Belmont ground where they host Croydon.
