Just a few short weeks ago, the thought of Dover Athletic winning three National League games in a row would have been a dream to their supporters.

But after wins over Hartlepool United and Boreham Wood in the last seven days, it means that that unthinkable thought is just 90 minutes away – standing in their way just happens to be the division’s form team and the manager’s old club…

As Dover prepare for the trip to Hampshire to face Eastleigh, Andy Hessenthaler has been talking to KSN about his side’s incredible week…

“It’s been a fantastic week – to get back to back wins and get our first away win of the season as well – it’s been a good week, and to be fair to the players after the weekend’s performance and win over Hartlepool, they carried it on in midweek away against Boreham Wood.” said Hessenthaler.

“So, things are starting to click a little bit regarding the organisation – the fitness levels are going up – and that is starting to get us out of the problems that we’re in. You’ve got to give the players a lot of credit, as for me, they’re all working so hard on the training ground and keen into games now.”

“We’re looking a threat going forward and what was pleasing against Boreham Wood was the clean sheet – it’s coming together, it’s still early days and how quickly things can change, and we’ve just got to keep going the way we have recently.”

“I’ve been fortunate that I’ve been there twice this year and got two 1-0 wins. Boreham Wood aren’t an easy side to play against, as they’re a big physical side and their set plays test you. And so we worked on that before the game and told them we couldn’t get bullied and they certainly didn’t do that.”

“I’m looking forward to it as it’s always nice to go back to an old club you’ve been at. I went there as number two to Richard (Hill) and had a good time when I got the chance to take over. They’ve had a transitional period themselves of course after their old Chairman went off to Sunderland, but the new people are nice people and the supporters are terrific.”

“I went there in the first place as Richard is a good friend of mine and was my number two at Gillingham, and he just phoned me up inviting me into the club and sold it to me as a terrific club going places. He’s a proper football person and I loved every minute of it – we didn’t exactly achieve what we wanted to and that was disappointing!”

“Everyone down there – the groundsmen, the tea ladies – they’re really good people – it was sad to leave, but I think that they understand why, and I’m looking forward to going back to see my old assistant Ben Strevens and he’s carried on the good work we began and got them going and they’re one of the form teams in the division and so we know it’ll be a really tough game.”

Eastleigh go into the game on the back of a 3-1 win at the Gallagher Stadium in midweek against Maidstone – a result that naturally enough went down well at Crabble.

“I sent Ben a message on Wednesday – “well done last night and see you at the weekend” – and them winning has given us the chance to close up, but come 3:00pm Saturday we know what we’ll be up against it, as if they win, they’ve got a chance of getting into the Play Off places.”
