Greenwich Borough 5-1 Sittingbourne
Greenwich Borough 5-1 Sittingbourne

After forty-three minutes of pretty average football, few would have expected what was to follow.

However, any Greenwich Borough supporters who decided to pass on this match to go Christmas shopping might have reason to regret it.

Victory ended Borough’s run of seven games without a win, and they did it in style in the second half.

Meanwhile, Sittingbourne might have been struggling to recover from their game three days earlier when they let slip a two goal lead with twelve minutes to go at Cray Wanderers where they ended up 3-2 losers.

Jack Sammoutis had a long range effort deflected that Jordan Carey saved comfortably,.then Jack Barham curled wide from twenty yards out.

Good interplay between Sammoutis and Chinedu McKenzie resulted in the former having a shot but he got no power behind it and Carey saved easily.

Finally, Sittingbourne had a shot but Ben Gorham sliced high and wide. Tyrone Guthrie did manage to get a shot on target but it was directly at George Kamurasi at waist height and the goalkeeper claimed without undue concern.

Sammoutis fired a free kick directly at the defensive wall before Sittingbourne came close to breaking the deadlock. Miles Cornwell had a shot blocked and it fell directly into the path of Chris Webber. Kamurasi came out quickly and charged it down at the expense of a corner.

Kamurasi was in action again moments later. John Coker led a break out from defence and played a 1-2 with Cornwell that sent him clear but his shot lacked conviction giving Borough’s goalkeeper the chance to save.

Two minutes before half time the hosts took the lead when Barham broke down the right before pulling back to Sam Corne who passed it into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area.

That advantage was short-lived however, and in injury time the Brickies levelled. Kane Rowland had a shot saved and it came out to Salvyn Kisitu who finished confidently from a tight angle.

There was still time for Barham to have a shot saved before the break and he was the first to try his luck in the second period with a long range effort that Carey saved.

Webber had a weak shot saved for Sittingbourne and Sammoutis had a shot deflected wide for Greenwich before the hosts went ahead. Sammoutis crossed and when Barham’s shot was blocked, McKenzie was on hand to score his fourth in four games.

Two minutes later, they gave themselves some breathing space when Barham again cut in from the left before shooting from distance. Although it was central it had too much on it for Carey and found the back of the net.

Sammoutis scored the goal he deserved ten minutes from time when he converted after McKenzie’s effort came back off the bar.

Borough finished the rout with five minutes remaining when substitute Travis Gregory broke through before driving across the face of goal for Barham to apply the final touch.
