Gills sign former Yeovil defender

Gillingham have signed former Yeovil Town defender Alex Lacey on a free transfer and on a two  year deal.

The 23 year old joins on a free after his contract at Huish Park came to an end and having made 47 appearances in all competitions last season, will be a welcome addition to a Gills side that struggled to keep clean sheets during the 2016/17 campaign.

Lacey swept the board at Yeovil’s annual end of season Player of the Year awards and has been tracked by a number of Football League sides.

The central defender began his career with Luton Town before joining Yeovil in the summer of 2015.

With the likes of Chris Herd and Ryan Jackson leaving Priestfield this summer, Ady Pennock and Director of Football, Peter Taylor, have drawn up a list of potential targets.

Lacey has fit the bill for a Gillingham side that lacked height and pace at the back last season. At six foot, two inches, Lacey will be a useful addition to a Gills squad that seems set to be drastically refreshed this summer.
