Gills game gets go ahead

Gillingham’s game with Swindon Town will go ahead as planned after the club and Kent Police settled their differences.

The game had been put in some doubt after Gillingham Football Club and Kent Police had failed to agree on the level of policing for the match, with Medway Council issuing a Prohibition notice that prevented fans from watching the game.

That would have seen the game being played behind closed doors with fans locked out of Priestfield Stadium.

However, that threat has now been lifted and the game will go ahead as scheduled with fans set to flock to Priestfield in their numbers for the must win game.

Gills chairman Paul Scally has told the BBC that he has paid an additional £10,000 “under duress” to the police to cover the cost of the extra manpower:

“There was never any doubt in my mind from the start that this match would go ahead,” he said.

“We purposely haven’t spoken to the media between now and the prohibition notice being issued because we’ve been dealing with our business of getting it resolved.”

Gillingham will be desperate for the win to keep their play-off hopes alive, whilst Swindon will be promoted to League One should they pick up at least a point, with a win giving them the chance to be promoted as Champions.
