Future looks bleak for Addicks
Future looks bleak for Addicks

Mathematically, Charlton’s chances of making the play-offs are still good, six wins from their remaining ten games should be enough. But anyone who has witnessed their last two performances will tell a different tale.

To give some idea of how bad they have been, Saturday’s lamentable showing against Fleetwood was actually an improvement on how they played against the Cod Army’s Fylde Coast neighbours, Blackpool, on Tuesday.

The side does not appear to have any belief, and even Karl Robinson is not his usual animated self on the touchline.

Saturday was similar to many recent performances, the Addicks started brightly, only to quickly fizzle out.

They managed seventeen shots on, but only two were on target.

In their last two games, Charlton have lost to a Blackpool side that was without a home win since October, and contested a goalless draw with Fleetwood, who came into the game on the back of a winless streak of ten. Saturday was the first time the Cod Army had kept a clean sheet in 2018.

Quite simply, Robinson’s team have not been good enough. For sure Fleetwood came with a plan to frustrate their hosts, but the Addicks should have enough quality in their ranks to deal with that.

Things do not get any easier either. In-form Plymouth pitch up at The Valley at the weekend, and will be backed by a vocal 2,000 plus travelling army.

Robinson’s future is the subject of much speculation, he has been heavily linked with the vacant Oxford job – he is 1/4 favourite with the bookies.

The U’s are expected to make an announcement about the position on Tuesday.

Roland Duchatelet has been quick to change managers in the past, but with the club expected to change hands, the owner will not go to the expense of dismissing his manager.

The club is without a CEO or CFO, and by now season tickets for the 2018/19 campaign should be on sale, but who is responsible for marketing them?

Similarly, plans for recruitment for next season should be in place, but with Robinson unlikely to still be at The Valley by then, any list is meaningless.

Not so long back the manager expressed his desire to stay at The Valley long term. On Saturday he concluded his press conference by saying, “A week is‎ a long time in football.”

That may turn out to be on of the gaffer’s more profound statements.
