Ebbsfleet United defeated a primarily young visiting Charlton side on Wednesday evening thanks to Matt Godden’s 75th minute penalty.WP_20140723_005

It was given for an innocuous challenge on the edge of the left hand side of the box.

The first half started brightly with both teams getting attempts at goal early on, Ebbsfleet were the first to show with new signing Charlie Sheringham getting on the end of a knockdown before weakly shooting at Dillon Phillips in the Charlton goal.

After four minutes, Charlton created their best chance of the match with captain for the evening Chris Solly overlapping down the right, his cross accurately found Simon Church in the centre but his header was expertly saved by Brandon Hall in the home goal.

In an end to end start, Daryl Mcmahon shot narrowly over after being teed up by Sheringham.WP_20140723_001

Charlton were creating plenty in the opening quarter of the game with Church hitting the ball over the bar twice, first from Tareiq Holmes- Dennis low cross from the left to the near post and then after being released with a ball over the top of the defence from young Jack Munns, playing in an unfamiliar left midfield role.

As the game settled down into its rhythm, it was Charlton who were maintaining possession comfortably with good shifts being put in by Jordan Cousins and new signing from Standard liege George Tucadean holding the ball up well up front.

It was these two that combined with the help of Jack Munns popping up on the right for Cousins to unleash a piledriver from the edge of the area just before the break, forcing Brandon Hall into another fine save.WP_20140723_003

Half time came and the Ebbsfleet defence had held firm, excellently marshalled by Anthony Acheampong.

The second half started in much the same fashion as the first with Charlton persevering with their passing game with the Ebbsfleet midfield harassing them impressively.

Charlton had their moments to score though when Tucadean turned and released Solly down the right whose cross was headed tamely at the goal by Nego, forcing a comfortable gather for Hall.

Just before the hour, came the onslaught of substitutes which stopped the flow of the game. Ebbsfleet had rare attacking moments in the second half but from one of them bought the decisive moment of the match.WP_20140723_002

Alex Osborn was bought down on the edge of the area by Terrell Thomas and the referee pointed to the spot. Matt Godden slammed the resulting penalty straight down the middle and that was that.

Charlton’s youngsters couldn’t muster a response and Ebbsfleet ran out time in what was a worthwhile friendly for both.
