Do Charlton lack a Plan B?
Do Charlton lack a Plan B?

Jason Euell’s Under-23 side will make the short trip‎ to Park View Road tonight to play Welling in the Kent Senior Cup.

The young Addicks go into the game on the back of a 4-1 win over Crewe on Monday. The game was played at Gresty Road, and Taylor Maloney (2), Aaron Barnes, and an own goal ‎were the scorers.

Maloney completed the scoring with a 30-yard screamer. The midfielder – who made his first team debut‎ as a substitute in the Checkatrade Trophy game at Crawley – was impressive and put in a mature performance.

Plenty of questions have been asked about Saturday’s defeat at Gillingham, notably the lack of a Plan B, and the side’s inability to come from behind to win a game.

Karl Robinson said this after the game:

‎”The goalkeeper got man of the match, but we didn’t take our chances, and that, unfortunately is the nature of the industry – we’ve got to score goals.

“We were the better team by a long way today, but fans don’t care about that, they care about winning. All we can do is keep doing the right things and make sure we keep making those chances.

“It’s been mentioned that we’ve not come back when we’ve gone behind this season, and if that was the case and we weren’t creating chances, I would be very disappointed and I would start to look a bit deeper at some of the roots. I’m frustrated, but I can’t question my players.

“You go in there and talk to the players about what they’re looking for, but they’ve got to score.”

Charlton did overcome Lee Holmes’ opener at Exeter to win 2-1 in the Carabao Cup in August. They also recovered from surrendering a two goal lead to go on and win at Oldham.

They did play more directly in the second half against Wigan, and Patrick Bauer was pushed up front late on at both Plymouth and Gillingham.

The problem has been the failure to convert chances. Though Wigan deservedly won at The Valley, the Addicks should have beaten both Plymouth and Gillingham.

Robinson is understandably frustrated with his side’s profligacy in front of goal, no team can be successful if they squander chances on a regular basis.

Lowly Bury visit The Valley on Saturday, and Charlton ‎will be without the creative ability of the suspended Ricky Holmes.

With Mark Marshall still recovering from a knock picked up at Stevenage in pre-season‎, Robinson does not have a like-for-like replacement.

Karlan Ahearne-Grant has been used in wide areas this season and seems the most likely replacement.
