Departures expected from Addicks
Departures expected from Addicks

The signings of 6’4″ central defender Patrick Bauer, and 6’7″ Danish striker Simon Makienok, gave Addicks fans a fillip and a broad hint of how Guy Luzon’s side may play this season.

Frederic Bulot was also expected to sign last week but will still probably be the next arrival.

This week it may be the exit door at The Valley that is more active.

Charlton have a surfeit of keepers at the moment. Stephen Henderson is unquestionably the club’s number one stopper, with Marko Dmitrovic providing the cover.

Nick Pope started last season vying for the keeper’s jersey with Henderson, but ended it on loan at Bury, after being overtaken in the pecking order by both Neil Etheridge and Dmitrovic.

It may be that Pope needs a fresh challenge to reignite his career. A season long loan has to be a distinct possibility.

Dillon Phillips is highly thought of but needs the experience of regular match action at a decent level. The 20-year-old was last season’s Under-21 skipper, and a loan spell at League Two or National League level would aid his development. He could be the next departure from The Valley.

There has been recent speculation linking Chris Solly with a move to Bristol City. It is difficult to see how the move could be completed.

Solly’s knee condition would not pass a medical. Without medical clearance, City would not be able to get insurance cover for the player.

Rhoys Wiggins is a player the Addicks would listen to offers for, but with three years remaining on a four-and-a-half-year deal, it has to be assumed that Wiggins is on good money.

Charlton would undoubtedly want a fee for him, and with his recent injury history and salary expectations, Wiggins could well struggle to find a new club.

Andre Bikey had a terrific start to last season, but the emergence of Joe Gomez and the arrival of Roger Johnson, saw Bikey fall down the pecking order. He is another player whose future probably lies away from The Valley.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Jordan Cousins and Callum Harriott all have their suitors. Wigan have had an initial bid for Harriott rejected but are sure to return with an improved offer.

Whilst the Addicks would be willing to sell Harriott, they will be hoping to retain the services of Gudmundsson and Cousins.

Joe Pigott is another a player whose future is subject to speculation. Pigott enjoyed a successful loan spell at Southend last season, and scored at Wembley, to help the Shrimpers win the League Two play-off final.

Southend manager, Phil Brown, is a known admirer of Pigott’s and has made no secret of his desire to take the striker back to Roots Hall.

It will be another fascinating week in SE7, and one in which there could be more departures than arrivals.
