Cray and their near neighbours Greenwich fought out a well contested goalless draw on Easter Monday with the result leaving the visitors third with one game to play ahead of the play offs.

Prior to The Wands final home game of the season captain Lea Dawson received the Player of The Year award from former Wands star Sam Wood and he put in another fine performance in this match to also celebrate signing a contract extension with Cray.

Borough started the game on top pushing Cray back in their own half and pressing the home defence when they tried to play out from the back. Rob Denness set up Liam McDevitt but he took the ball too wide past the advancing Nicky Blue and ran it out of play.

The lively Travis Gregory had an effort saved by Blue and after good work by Bradley Pritchard Gregory was again denied by The Wands keeper diving low down to his right. Lewis Spence went close soon after before Cray rallied late on in the half and Karl Dent hit the bar with a volley from twenty yards after Borough failed to clear a corner.

The Wands started the second half in positive fashion, Brandon Scott set up Danny Haynes, but somehow his shot bounced back out from hitting the inside of the post. Scott again set up Haynes as Cray continued to press, but this time the ex-Charlton man curled his shot narrowly wide from the edge of the box.

Greenwich battled back from there with Peter Sweeney having a shot brilliantly saved by Blue who then denied McDevitt. Both sides had chances as the half went on Haynes & Prescott going close for Cray while Liam Hickey put a free kick just over at the other end.

Wands’ sub Luke Medley saw a goal bound effort blocked, before Lewis Clark forced another great save from Blue following a slick passing move from Borough. In injury time Haynes hit the side netting following a strong run, but in the end both sides had to settle for a point, which was about fair over the whole game.

Tony Russell’s side now travel to Three Bridges on Thursday before their final game at Faversham on Saturday, while Gary Alexander’s Borough face Guernsey on Saturday needing a win to guarantee third place and home advantage in the play off semi final.
