Coyle satisfied with Welling performance

As a reaction to two poor performances at home Welling Manager Jamie Coyle elected to change formations and was satisfied with the performance if not the result.

He explained saying: “We did a lot of work in training to change our shape, as we did today, and I thought it looked really good and it worked for the majority of the game.

“We knew that Truro played 3-5-2 so we looked at matching them today. I thought that for one training session and a bit of tactical information before the game, for them to perform like they did today, I was really really pleased.”

Although the system worked for this game it doesn’t necessarily mean it will be adopted for every match but Coyle was delighted that he has options. He said: “It’s a big change from what we’ve been playing recently and it’s good to know that we can revert to that shape and do the job.”

Another reason for changing formation is that with winter setting in it’s harder to play flowing football. “The pitches are turning now. That half (the park end) was frozen in the second half and it’s just trying to limit the mistakes all over the pitch. Individually and collectively, today the boys were tremendous.”

Attack-wise Coyle was also happy: “I’m really pleased with the chances we’ve created. The deliveries out from (Ben) Jefford and Archie (Johnson) when he came on, and from Callum (Driver) on the right, we had some real decent balls going in the box today. That’s where we’ve struggled recently, quality from the wide areas.

“It’s important that when you’ve got players like Bradley Goldberg and Tom Bradbrook up top you’ve got to put a decent supply in.”

Jack Jebb also demonstrated that aspect with his cross for Jack Parkinson’s goal which Coyle described as ‘brilliant’ along with other deliveries in the first period. He continued: “His crossing in the first half, we had a couple of chances from as well. I think he struggled in the second half. I don’t know if it was the short run up but he kept hitting the first man.

“His quality for his goal was absolutely fantastic. You almost expect him to score when he’s in those positions he’s got such quality.”

Driver came in for his first Welling appearance having signed from Hemel Hempstead Town and his man of the match performance drew praise from Coyle who said: “Callum’s come in and was tremendous. I thought what a great debut. He’s a player I’ve played alongside and won this division and I know he’s got real real quality going forward. He slotted in at wing back and did really well. I’m really pleased with him.”

That gives Coyle a problem of how to fit Connor Dymond back in following his absence through suspension but it’s a problem that manager’s like to have: “It’s options, that’s what’s nice” he said. “Connor can play centre half. He can play right back.

“He can play centre midfield. The times I looked at him last year he was a centre midfielder and he did really well. What’s nice is we’ve got a few options.”

One player on the way out is Eli Phipps who made his farewell appearance off the bench before returning to Colchester United. Coyle said: “We’ve spoken to him this week. With regards to the match time he’s had, he wants to go back. He’d rather play every week but I can’t guarantee anyone that they can play every week and I think that he’s made a decision that he’s going to go back and play under 23 football.”

Injuries sustained against Truro have given Coyle problems. Joe Healy was first to depart with a knee problem. Coyle said: “He is a bit stiff. He says it’s an impact injury but I think that he may have twisted it so we will have to assess it during the week.”

Tom Bradbrook went off four minutes later and Coyle commented: “His hamstring was a bit tight and again we are going to have to assess that.” Ben Jefford also had to be replaced with five minutes remaining but Coyle didn’t believe it to be likely to keep him out for too long.

Next weekend, Welling have no game which is not something Coyle would want ordinarily however on this occasion he can see a positive. He said: “Ideally we want to play a game but if you have a knock to three important players, as we did today, it’s a good thing that we have rehab and can try and get them back for two weeks time.”
