Coyle pleased with Welling win

After Welling United’s victory over Hungerford Town, Wings’ player manager Jamie Coyle felt that the scoreline made the game look tighter than it was.

He explained “When you are 3-1 up they are going to come back at you. We had three or four chances to kill the game off but if you look at the second half, although they had quite a lot of possession, they didn’t look like scoring a goal.

“I thought that we defended in our box really well and we were fairly comfortable. I should have done better with the (second) goal but if we take our chances at the other end, it’s 4-1 or 5-1.

“In terms of the work rate, I thought that the boys were magnificent.” he continued. “They really dug in. It was a professional performance, which we needed.”

Two players made their first starts for the club, Jack Jebb and Jeffrey Monakana. Coyle was delighted with their contributions saying “We’ve got two players who started today who haven’t played this year and it’s magnificent how well they’ve done. Jebb, in his set piece delivery and his work rate was magnificent today.

“It’s something we’ve missed a little bit in terms of set pieces. His quality on dead balls was unbelievable today.”

Monakana, on a one month loan from Sutton United, also merited praise with Coyle stating “He hasn’t played a game yet this year and to be able to play for 60 or 70 minutes, and offer that outlet for us in terms of carrying the ball and relieving a lot of pressure on the back four is great.”

Having now recorded their first victory of the season, Coyle wants to see them build on it. “We’re three unbeaten now.” he said. “It was resilient defending on Tuesday night (at Eastbourne Borough). We didn’t really look like we were going to score a goal but again the work rate was there and the togetherness was there and that’s what’s key.. We can now build on that.

“I said at the beginning of the season, if they all give us 110%, blood, sweat and tears, with the quality that we’ve just brought in and the quality we already have, we’ll move forward quickly..”

Lloyd Macklin, another new signing, came on as a substitute and also delighted Coyle. “It’s something we’ve missed.” He said and expanded on it by suggesting “It’s something that we haven’t really had in our team, a front man that can run in behind and stretch teams, and it’s great. He worked off scraps today and he did really, really well. It’s exciting working with three new boys.”

Although Tom Bradbrook had to be substituted in the first period, it was not before he’d scored his first Welling goal. “He was due one.” Coyle joked. “He’s given us every avenue so far this season. He’s really been a threat in the final third, hold up play, flicking the ball on for Brad and he’s done everything except score a goal.

“He’s opened his account now and it’s confidence for him to move forward and get a few more.”

Coyle also expressed his pleasure that Welling have a week with no mid-week game so they can have an additional training session. He broke down how it would work saying “We’ll get a little bit of fitness in the legs of the boys on Tuesday and then a bit more structure on Thursday. We need to get a little bit sharper throughout the team, including myself.

“When you’ve got Saturday-Tuesday, your Thursday is a recovery session. I think it’s more of an individual thing. We’ll look at the players who might need more, including myself, and then manage it from there.”
