Conway targets success at home round

This weekend will mark Mike Conway’s home race in the two-year-long Superseason as the WEC paddock arrives in Silverstone for the third round of the season.

Two second places in Spa and Silverstone has left Mike and the #7 TOYOTA TS050 in 2nd place in the standings, with the sister car leading the way after victories in the first races of the year.

Inspired by one-two victory at Le Mans, TOYOTA aims to have another positive weekend at Silverstone as it looks to maintain its 100% start to the season and earn another one-two finish from pole position for its sixth consecutive WEC victory.

Mike’s last visit to Silverstone saw him secure pole position in 2017, before an incident in the race brought an end to their chances of victory. However, Mike’s confidence will still remain high despite last years result as Toyota aims to continue its run of finishes on the podium at Silverstone since returning to the WEC in 2012.

The 3.66-mile circuit is one of the favourites for the drivers with a series of high-speed corners such as the iconic Maggots and Becketts section. This in the mind, the team has opted to run the high-downforce specification TS050 HYBRID, for the first race this season, which delivers more grip in corners at the expense of top speed on the straights.

On the back of the dominant start to the season, TOYOTA will face a bigger challenge from six non-hybrid LMP1 cars following updates to the Equivalence of Technology (EoT) regulations. Delivering more performance to its rivals, the non-hybrid cars will benefit from increased fuel flow, now 43.75% more than the TS050 HYBRID, with the non-hybrid naturally aspirated LMP1s benefiting from minimum weight reductions.

Hoping to impress in front of his home fans this weekend, Mike hopes to have another strong race in his TOYOTA despite an increased challenge from his rivals.

“I can’t wait to get back racing to be honest. It was a nice break after Le Mans but I’m ready to go now. It’s a bit different, racing at home, because I have some friends and family coming to watch me race which is nice as there are not many chances for them. Also the fans at Silverstone are great so it’s a good atmosphere. The target for Silverstone is of course another one-two victory, and I hope the #7 will be on top. Competition will be tougher after the EoT adjustments but hopefully, we still have an edge.”
