Charlton Athletic v Shrewsbury Town preview

Shrewsbury have been the surprise package in League One this season. They have been in the automatic promotion places virtually all season, despite the presence of Lancashire heavyweights, Blackburn and Wigan.

Karl Robinson watched their match with Gillingham in the week, and paid this tribute to Shrews boss, Paul Hurst:

“I went to watch Shrewsbury on Tuesday, what an unbelievable and honest team.

“They’re very hard working and very well coached. There are very few flaws in their game. I know they rested one or two players, and they’ll be back in for Saturday.

“We’re really excited by it. It’s one of the best managerial jobs of the year bar none. It’s incredible what he (Hurst) has achieved. We’ve got to be ready.”

‎Robinson mentioned that Hurst rested one or two players, but there has been an illness bug in the Shrewsbury camp this week, and that may have been the reason for their absence.

Robinson will have nearly a full squad to choose from. Only Billy Clarke, Stephy Mavididi and Dillon Phillips are sidelined.

Patrick Bauer and Tariqe Fosu are fit, and Lewis Page and Naby Sarr are available again. But Fosu is unlikely to start, as the manger explained at his Thursday press conference:

“No, probably not. If you want him to play the next number of games, then no. You’ve got to be very careful.”

Robinson may opt to play Bauer and Jason Pearce at the heart of the defence. His first choice pairing have not played together since 23 September.

Jake Forster-Caskey and Ahmed Kashi will be the deep lying midfield duo, with Mark Marshall, Joe Aribo, Sullay Kaikai and Ben Reeves contesting the three more advanced midfield positions.

In form Josh Magennis will continue up front, with Ashley Maynard-Brewer likely to come in for Dillon Phillips on the bench.

Charlton could look something like this:

Amos; Solly, Bauer, Pearce, Dasilva; Kashi, Forster-Caskey, Marshall, Reeves, Kaikai; Magennis.

‎Subs: Maynard-Brewer, Konsa, Jackson, Aribo, Fosu, Zyro, Ajose.

The referee will be Christopher Sarginson from Staffordshire.

The Valley attendance will be swollen by fans taking advantage of the club’s Football For A Fiver promotion.

It would be nice if they could witness a win over one of the division’s top teams. Robinson believes they may be lucky.

The match programme will incorporate the 2017/18 handbook. The bumper issue will be a 144 page edition and will cost £5.
